Watercolours

I was brought up in one of the most beautiful areas of the world and because it is so different, it has taken some time for the Border landscape to get into the blood. But through the eye of the artist, the heart opens and I find myself being more and more in awe with it.

The Scottish weather doesn't lend itself to painting outside, so when I paint landscape it is usually in a contorted position in the front of a car wondering what to do with the water-jar.

I often start by drawing very loosely with masking fluid. This gets me into the blank sheet of paper before I start applying the watercolour. When the paint is completely dry I rub off the masking fluid and assess which of the white marks that are left should be softened or altered.
